On a sunny Father’s Day fixture at Merritt College, Soul earned a clean sheet 1-0 victory versus visiting Cal Storm, breaking a three game draw streak versus Storm that dates back to last season.
Soul looked strong as soon as the opening whistle blew, controlling possession and playing much of the initial phase of the match in the attacking half of the pitch.
Oakland were rewarded for this pressure in the 18th minute when Shae Murison and Sydney Middaugh made a quick run together into the middle of the Storm box. Murison played a baby pass to Middaugh who was all alone to bury a shot into the left side of the twine to give her side a 1-0 advantage.
Following the goal, Storm worked their way back into the match, beginning to put together some offensive pressure of their own, earning a number of scoring chances, but failing to solve Soul keeper Kate Plachy.
The second half of play saw Oakland take control once again, knocking on the door to double their lead on numerous occasions.
Despite not being able to add to their lead, and a late push from a Storm side desperate to find an equalizer, Soul were able to hold onto their narrow lead until the final whistle.
Soul is back in action in just two days when they head to Marin to take on Siren FC on Tuesday, June 17th at 5:30 PM PT.
