Oakland fought hard in their first ever action at the Oakland Coliseum on Saturday afternoon, but eventually fell to visiting Stockton Cargo for the second time this season, losing by a final score of 1-2.
The match started fairly routine for both sides, as neither club could create any truly dangerous scoring opportunities in the first 25 minutes following the starting whistle.
Oakland, however, looked slightly more in control of the game to this point, moving the ball well and keeping the ball away from their defensive third.
Despite this, it was Cargo who would score first, when they capitalized on their first earned corner kick of the contest. The service found a leaping Haley Bostard who headed a shot off the crossbar and finished her own rebound to make it 0-1 in the 28th minute.
The game settled back into a near stalemate following the Stockton goal for the remainder of the half, with the exception of a 38th minute moment where Soul’s Sydney Middaugh found herself alone behind the defense, but put her shot attempt just over the crossbar.
Soul came out in the second half looking hungry for an equalizer. In the 54th minute they found one when Audrey Lam found a bit of space in the Stockton penalty area and played a brilliant pass into the center which found Sam Tran alone to take a strike, beating the Cargo keeper to the left and leveling the match at 1-1.
This lead didn’t last long, however. Just three minutes later in the 57th minute, Stockton regained the lead when a Soul turnover in their own defensive third led to a wide open look at goal from Cargo’s Samantha Tristan who beat Oakland keeper Dina Frenkel to the left side to make the match 1-2 in favor of the visitors.
Oakland began a desperate push to level the match once again, but couldn’t find the back of the net, despite Frenkel making multiple huge saves to keep the match close.
Dropping the match levied a heavy blow to Soul’s playoff hopes, as essential perfection will now be required to even have an outside chance.
Oakland will return to the road for their next USL W League action on June 12th at Academica SC. Kickoff for that game is scheduled for 7 PM PT.
